Tivoli

The city is di Tivoli, located along the Aniene river, on the slopes of the Tiburtini Mountains, east of Rome, has always enjoyed a strategic role thanks to its position, which made it possible to control traffic to and from Abruzzo.
The richness of the territory and the favorable conditions, also from a climatic point of view, have meant that; that Tivoli was chosen to build some of the finest examples; important examples of Italian architecture, in particular Villa Adriana, from the Roman era, Villa d'Este, dating back to the sixteenth century and the nineteenth-century Villa Gregoriana.

History

According to tradition, the origin of Tivoli dates back to 1215 BC. and resides in the ancient city of Rome. Latin of Tibur, defined “Superbum” by Virgil in some passages of the Aeneid. The original settlement was born on the left bank of the Aniene and developed with the fortifications, the acropolis and the first ancient buildings, which dominated the ford of the river, a crossing point for the transhumance of the flocks. closely linked to its strategic position. The Roman Empire understood; immediately the potential of the area, so as to subjugate the city, which soon became the seat of many villas of wealthy Roman lords, as evidenced by the numerous remains. The most famous villa of the Roman era is Villa Adriana, now recognized as a World Heritage Site; by UNESCO.

In the Middle Ages, Tivoli was disputed by various feudal lords and then remained essentially under the control of the Church for years. In 1550 he was appointed governor of the city; Cardinal Ippolito d’Este, who had the famous Villa d’Este built. Tivoli underwent; the biggest change massive during the Second World War, being the scene of heavy bombings, aimed at interrupting the connections between Rome and the Adriatic.

Villa d’Este

Villa d’Este

After Hadrian's death, the villa underwent a series of changes. a slow decline, also because; stripped of its marbles, and its precious objects.
